The Area - Truckee

From fine dining, eclectic cafes and casual bar fare, to retro diners and ice cream parlors that are reminiscent of a bygone era, the town of Truckee has something for everyone, with enough variety and selection to keep you coming back for more. 

Founded in 1863, this original mining town located nearly 6,000 ft. high into the Sierras is recognized as one of the most authentic mountain towns in the West. Dating back to the days of the Donner Party, the town has a rich history that can be explored in the many local museums including the Truckee Railroad Museum and Old Jail Museum. 

The town of Truckee comes to life in the summer and becomes a great destination for music, outdoor festivals, food markets and much more. The Farmers Market begins in early summer and is a great place to stock up on the local organic produce. Truckee Thursdays features live music and the local Wine Walk is a crowd favorite.

The Truckee River runs 121 miles long and is the sole outlet of Lake Tahoe. The river is home to the native Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, rainbow trout and brown trout, making it a favorite for local anglers. There’s also family-friendly whitewater rafting, tubing and kayaking on the river at various times throughout the year. 

Whether you are a beginner runner or avid cyclist, Truckee has trails for all different levels of sport. The Truckee River Legacy Trail offers miles of paved trails, ideal for a family bike ride or evening run. The Sagehen Creek Trail and Emigrant Trail are also great options for hiking and discovering the first bloom of Truckee’s wildflowers. 

Downtown Truckee is home to some great shopping—from boutique clothing stores to the local wine shops, you’ll find all of life’s necessities as well as those unique, local treasures that reflect the areas authentic history. Summertime even brings out the local street vendors, offering up seasonal products and local artwork.
